It didn't help that she didn't see it coming. It had nothing to do with looking both ways or the fact that traffic was coming from the opposite direction or anything like that. It was just as ordinary, though.

It was the rain.

London, in the springtime, was simply rainy. And though the driver of the other car tried to stop, and though Hattie herself tried to get out of the way, the fact remained that the driver wasn't paying attention and his car wasn't equipped with very good brakes.

When Hattie saw heard the screech, she looked up from her phone and gasped. The step she took to get out of the way put her further into the path of the oncoming car and the next thing she knew, she was staring up at the rain, wetness soaking through her back.

An ambulance was called and people were chattering at her, but she couldn't register much more than the fact that everything was wet and cold. No longer holding her phone, she flexed her fingers toward where she saw it and whimpered one word, "Kitt."

__________

When Kitt's personal assistant got the call from Royal Hope Hospital, she attempted to reach him as he was on his way in to the office himself. "Mr. Knight, your wife was taken to Royal Hope Hospital in London. She's in the emergency room."

The Trans Am didn't even slow down as it pulled a U-turn in the middle of the road and raced towards the hospital. The parking garage saw a hurried morph and then a very worried-looking young man was bounding towards the elevators, then speeding through the corridors, hastily pushing his way through anyone in his path as he rushed for the emergency department. He only stopped when he finally reached the admissions desk, urgently pressing them for any information about his wife.

The first person to encounter the tall man was a triage nurse who, quite frankly, had her hands full with an hysterical mother, a drunk man and a couple of drug-seeking crackheads. She held up her hand to said man while she finished her phone call, dismissed the drug seekers and then told the young mother that she'd be seen as soon as possible.

Finally, after getting the drunk man a disposable bowl from under the admissions desk, she turned a harried look on the man and raised an eyebrow. "You said something about your wife?"

Kitt was alternately tapping his fingers impatiently on the desk, and running his hands through his hair in frustration. Sometimes both at the same time. When she finally spoke to answer his question, it nearly caught him off-guard.

"My wife, yes. Hattie Jackson. Knight. Hattie Jackson-Knight. She was just brought in - a car accident. Please, I need to know if she's all right." His voice was rushed and worried as he stared at the woman, pleadingly.

"Jackson, Jack-" The woman looked up at the man who clearly didn't know his own wife's name and raised her eyebrows. "Jackson-Knight."

Skimming down the list, she nodded, then held up her finger. "Just one moment." Picking up the phone, she spoke into it for a second and then nodded again. "Thank you."

She turned back to Kitt and looked very, very apologetic. "I'm sorry, sir. Your wife is currently being seen by the doctors. She was hit by a car not far from here and they're doing everything they can."

"Yes, yes." He waved his hands impatiently at the woman to hurry her up, but then his face crumpled in confused disbelief. "Hit by a car? A car?" He stepped back from the desk, the blood draining from his face, nodding slowly. "Yes. Thank you."

He went in search of a chair, completely forgetting to ask how she was, whether or not he could see her, and when.

Another ten minutes went by before the woman thought to look for Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome again. Not that a couple of nurses came out to look or anything. Or even were back discussing that his wife was a pretty lucky lady, you know, to have such a good-looking- nah.

But still, when she called him up again, it was with an update. "Mr. Knight? Your wife, you can go see her now. The doctors are still working on her, but she can have one visitor."

Directing him down a hall was Nurse Tonson, and she kept sneaking glances over her shoulder before finally saying, "Mr. Knight, your wife was struck by a car doing approximately twenty-five miles per hour. Several witnesses said they saw your wife attempt to move out of the way but with the rain and road conditions..." She trailed off and then stopped outside a room. "We brought her in and she had a broken ankle, despite that speed, which is unusual. She's been given a high dose of painkillers, due to numerous scrapes and bruises, including one along here." The woman indicated her cheek.

He'd been sitting with his knees on his elbows and his head in his hands, but when he heard his name he was standing almost before she'd finished speaking. Following her, he was taking in everything she was saying, trying to make sense of it. "So... is she badly hurt or not?" If the woman was being deliberately vague to annoy him, she was doing a good job of it. It didn't matter. He gave her a look and then pushed past her into the room, not rudely, but he wasn't being overly careful, either.

He hated hospitals at the best of times, and this wasn't one of them. He felt like he'd spent too much of his life waiting around in hospital parking lots for news of someone's condition, and while this time around he was able to actually be inside and being given information first-hand, he found that it really didn't make him feel any better about the situation.

When he entered, he would have seen Hattie lying in bed, propped up by the pillows around her and nearly as white except for a large bruise on the side of her head. Her right foot was in a sling at the bottom of the bed, not in a plaster cast, but an inflatable one.

She heard the door open and felt Kitt enter, so she opened her eyes, as difficult as it felt to do so. "Hey," she said as carefully as her drugged out state would allow. She even gave him a smile to go with the casual greeting. "'bout time you got here."

He rushed to her side, pulling himself up short only long enough to give her a cursory examination to make sure he didn't interfere with any of the apparatuses she was attached to.

He would bring himself to look at them properly later.

For the time being, he snatched up her free hand, squeezing it with his own and kissing it, not trusting himself to answer right away. Instead he just nodded, blinking a little too much at the tears that were threatening.

Hattie smiled at him even more when he kissed her hand, watching his reaction with all the concern of a seriously drugged out person. "Oh, honey. I'm fine." Pause. "Really."

Trying to adjust as much as she could with tubes, wires, a sore body and an ankle trussed up in a sling, she gave a grunt and then a groan when she couldn't move that much. "I'll be fine," she promised again. "Just a little tired. Can you believe it?" Her smile turned teasing. "A car. Hit me. On the street. A car." Her mind was not all there. Drugs.

"I'll find that other driver." That was a promise he would keep. "How are you feeling?" He cast his eyes over her, up and down the length of her body, looking for any other obvious signs of injury. He finally sat down in the chair beside the bed, not letting go of her hand.

"Accident, Kitt." She shook her head and watched as the room spun around her. Her smile wavered slightly and she squeezed his hand. she ha a feeling that if she wasn't as drugged she'd feel so much better. "It was just an accident. Happened so fast."

"Did the other driver stop? It's not an accident if they fled the scene." His worry was changing over into anger, his own feelings of helplessness fueling it - until she squeezed his hand, bringing his focus instantly back to her. He kissed her hand again, then reached out to brush her hair away from her face, leaving his hand there as stared intently down at her.

The nurses came in throughout the night to check on Hattie, trying their best to not disturb Kitt as they did so. The doctor had scheduled her for an easy surgery in the morning, a pin in her ankle.

When she woke, though, the painkillers had worn off completely and she still had no pain in her ankle. When the nurse came in to check her vitals at seven, Hattie looked over and saw Kitt asleep on the cot and smiled gently. The nurse caught her look and explained that he'd come late the night before and stayed all night, finishing with a whispered, "He's a good man, that husband of yours." Hattie nodded and agreed before explaining that she had no pain.

The nurse told her that her ankle was probably numb and Hattie asked to see the doctor before her surgery. "Kitt," she whispered after the nurse left, her voice low and singsongy. "Honey?"

One thing that he didn't think he could ever get used to as a human was dreaming, and particularly not when the dreams were vivid and disturbing. He was frowning in his sleep, his forehead wrinkled and troubled, so it was something of a relief when Hattie's voice broke into his dreams and slowly drew him out of them.

He rolled over on the cot, blinking his eyes for a few seconds without any real recognition behind them. He sat up and swung his legs over the cot, then sat rubbing his face and yawning, still not fully awake.

It was obvious when he rolled over that he hadn't slept well and she gave him a small smile. "Hey," she said quietly. "Morning. The nurse went to get the doctor." She motioned toward her foot. "It doesn't hurt this morning, not even a little."

Her smile turned even more affectionate and she added, "I'm sorry I was so out of it when you got here yesterday."

Morning? It was morning already? He shook his head to clear it, and yawned again as he looked at her, then at her foot.

"G'morning." He wondered vaguely about coffee, looking at her askance. "Not even a little?"

He raised a hand, brushing off her comment. "Not your fault, Hattie. Understandable." He gave her a tired smile of his own.

"Not even a little." She gave a small shrug, then looked around the room. "I don't know why, either. It just... doesn't hurt."

Concerned, her brow furrowed. "Kitt, you look really tired. You didn't have to stay, you should have gone home. It would have been fine. I don't want to have to worry about you," she said sternly, attempting to tease him a bit better this morning.

"When will you see the doctor again?" He stood, stretched, then walked the short distance to where she was lying in her bed.

"I didn't want to go home. I wanted to be here. I'm fine." He'd be better with coffee, but he could go in search of that later. "I just want you to be fine, too."

"He should be coming any-"

Just then, a very kindly looking old man came into the room with a big smile. "Ms. Jackson, good morning. And Mr. Knight. Sleep well?" He continued without really waiting for an answer, picking up the chart at the end of Hattie's bed. "How's your pain this morning?"

"Um, I don't actually have any," Hattie explained.

"No pain?" The doctor looked a bit dubious. "I'm curious." Very gently, he lowered her leg and opened the inflatable cast. "I don't want the circulation to have been cut off-"

He frowned when he saw her ankle and then looked at her. Hattie frowned at his expression. "What's wrong?"

"Does this hurt?" She felt him poke, but it didn't hurt, so she shook her head. "I'll be right back." He lifted her leg into the sling again and then left the room.

Kitt watched the doctor leave the room, then exchanged a look of concerned puzzlement with Hattie. For the first time, he longed for his scanners, if only so that he could find out what was going on without having to wait to be told.

Hattie gave Kitt a look of confusion, too, and then leaned forward to try and reach the top of the sling, herself. When she couldn't get it on the first, second or fifth try, she finally flopped back and gave him a look.

"Gonna help?"

He shook his head, slowly. "No. Leave it alone until he gets back, Hattie." Like this, he didn't know much about medicine, but he knew better than to mess with her sling.

"Fine."

She was going to figure out how to get her leg out of that sling before he came back. There was a reason she didn't hurt and she had a feeling- Ooh, maybe if she TOLD Kitt. After struggling for another second, she lay back again and gave him another Look.

"Okay, Kitt? I don't think my ankle is broken anymore. I think it healed itself. I want to see it. I want to move it."

He looked at her, blinking slowly, a look of confusion on his face. "That's not possible, Hattie. Injuries like broken bones don't just heal overnight. They gave you a lot of drugs last night. Perhaps the effects haven't all worn off yet."
